What are Engine Heat Tabs?
Engine heat tabs are also called temperature indicator tabs. They are small, adhesive-backed metal discs that are attached to the surface of the engine. They contain a low-melting-point alloy (solder) with a specific melting point sandwiched in the center, and the outer shell is usually made of aluminum (non-melting).

Working principle of engine heat tabs
- Applied to a critical location on the cylinder block/cylinder head, the center alloy remains solid at normal temperatures.
- Once the set melting point is reached, the center alloy melts and leaks out, leaving a hollow circular hole, which can be visually identified as overheating.
- The outer aluminum ring does not melt; only the center melts out. This process is irreversible and tamper-proof, providing permanent evidence of overheating.

Application of engine Heat tabs
1. **Overheating Evidence:** In repair/warranty disputes, prove whether the engine has overheated (e.g., due to water pump or radiator malfunction).
2. **Liability Determination:** Differentiate between product quality issues and usage/cooling system malfunctions, protecting the rights of manufacturers/refurbishers.
3. **Temperature Monitoring:** Quickly determine if the engine has exceeded its safe operating temperature, preventing serious damage.
4. **Maintenance Marking:** Affixed after major repairs/refurbishments as a status traceability identifier.

Common classifications
- Gasoline engine type: Melting point approximately 127°C (260°F); suitable for gasoline engines, detecting severe overheating.
- Diesel engine type: Melting point 116–121°C (240–250°F); diesel engines operate at lower temperatures, providing earlier warnings.
- Marine engine type: Melting point 91–93°C (195–200°F); marine engines have a unique cooling environment, resulting in a lower threshold.
- Low-temperature general-purpose type: Melting point approximately 104–113°C (220–235°F); used for overheat monitoring of general machinery/equipment.
